QatarEnergy announces North Field West LNG expansion project
QatarEnergy, the state-owned energy company, on February 25 unveiled the North Field West LNG Expansion Project, signaling another leap in Qatar's LNG production capabilities. The project aims to elevate Qatar's LNG production capacity to 142mn tonnes/year before the end of the decade, marking an 85% increase from current production levels.
Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, CEO of QatarEnergy, also announced the discovery of additional gas quantities in the North Field, estimating 240 trillion ft3. This increase raises Qatar's gas reserves from 1,760 to over 2,000 trillion ft3, along with boosts in condensates reserves from 70 to more than 80bn barrels.
“These are very important results of great dimensions that will take Qatar’s gas industry to new horizons, as they will enable us to begin developing a new LNG project from the North Field’s western sector with a production capacity of about 16mn tonnes/year,” he said.
The CEO affirmed that QatarEnergy will immediately initiate the basic engineering works required to ensure the smooth progress of the newly announced project, aligning with the approved schedule.
Qatar has been actively expanding its LNG production capacity, with ongoing projects such as the North Field Expansion, encompassing North Field South and North Field East expansion projects, set to commence production in 2026. This project alone is poised to contribute over 48mn tonnes/year to global LNG supplies, raising Qatar's overall LNG production capacity to 126mn tonnes/year.
