Qatar pledges $6mn for Gas for Gaza: press
An agreement reached between Qatar, the Palestinian Authority and the entity that manages the only power plant in the Gaza Strip could see Israeli gas replacing diesel fuel there, The Times of Israel reported December 26.
The Times reported that Qatar’s envoy to the Palestinian territories, Mohammad al-Emadi, pledged $60mn to support midstream infrastructure that would tie into the offshore Leviathan natural gas field.

Gaza’s only power plant runs on imported diesel fuel and is prone to daily blackouts that can lost as long as 12 hours. T
The availability of reliable and cost-efficient natural gas in Gaza will allow the power plant, built originally by US energy company Enron (now GPGC) as a combined-cycle gas turbine, to be converted back to gas operations. This will also mean less dependence on electricity imports.
The so-called Gas for Gaza initiative is a complex one that brings Israel, Hamas, the Palestinian Authority, Egypt and the European Union, among others, together. Gas for Gaza is included in the list of flagship initiatives in the European Commission’s proposed Economic and Investment Plan for the Southern Neighbourhood, put forward February 9.
