Qatar picks McDermott for North Field expansion work
Qatar Energy (QE) announced on January 3 it had awarded an engineering procurement construction and installation (EPCI) contract to McDermott for offshore work to expand the capacity of the North Field LNG project.
QE sanctioned the first $29bn phase of the expansion, known as North Field East (NFE), in February last year, that will raise Qatar's liquefaction capacity from 77mn to 110mn metric tons/year by the late 2020s. A second phase, North Field South (NFS), is set to take this capacity up to 126mn mt/yr.

The scope of the contract issued to McDermott covers 13 normally unmanned wellhead platform topsides, including eight for NFE and five for NFS, as well as connecting pipelines and related shore approaches, beach valve stations and buildings.
Qatar Energy added that a separate award would be made for the supply of jackets and pipelines for NFS during the first half of this year following a tender.
