Qatar Petroleum makes debut in Suriname
Qatar Petroleum announced June 19 that it was awarded two interests in offshore blocks in Suriname that are adjacent to recent discoveries, marking its debut in the country.
A consortium including Qatar Petroleum, with a 20% stake, Suriname’s state-owned Staatsolie, with a 40% stake, and operator TotalEnergies, with the remaining interest, secured rights to explore the shallow waters in blocks 6 and 8 offshore Suriname.

Qatar Petroleum CEO Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, who also serves as the Qatari minister of state of energy affairs, said this marked the country’s first steps into Suriname’s energy sector.
“This successful result also increases our presence in the Guyana-Suriname Basin and further strengthens Qatar Petroleum’s footprint in Latin America, marking yet another successful step towards realizing our international growth ambitions,” he said.
The blocks cover roughly 2,750 km2 and near proven reserves. Suriname, which borders oil-rich Guyana, holds mostly oil reserves. State-owned Staatsolie also has a sales record in refined products.
