Qatar Finds New Gas Deposits
Qatar has discovered a natural gas field which may contain 2.5 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas, various media reports have said.
The discovery, which is first in nearly 42 years, was made at 4-North offshore block near Qatar's massive North Field. Qatar Petroleum, Germany's Wintershall and Japan's Mitsui plan to develop the field, reports suggest.
“We will start production, God willing, in the next few years,” Mohammed Saleh Al Sada, Qatar’s energy minister, told reporters, Bloomberg said.
Qatar's North Field is the world's largest non-associated gas field, containing nearly 900 tcf, and the new find is 0.28 percent of the country's proven reserves, Reuters said.
According to the latest BP Statistical review, Qatar's proved gas reserves stood at 884.5 tcf, or around 12 percent of global gas reserves, at the end of 2011, Reuters added.
