Qatar discusses LNG supplies to Germany
Qatar and Germany have agreed that their respective commercial entities would re-engage and progress discussions on long-term LNG supplies, state-run QatarEnergy said on March 20 in a statement.
QatarEnergy added that it had been discussing the supply of Qatari LNG to Germany for a number of years with German companies. “However, until recently, such discussions did not materialise into definitive agreements due to the lack of clarity on the long-term role of gas in Germany’s energy mix and the requisite LNG import infrastructure,” the company said.

In a meeting held between Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatari minister of state for energy affairs and CEO of QatarEnergy and Robert Habeck, the German minister for economic affairs and climate action, Berlin confirmed that it has taken swift and concrete actions to fast-track the development of two LNG receiving terminals as a matter of priority to allow for the long term import of LNG to Germany and that such scheme has the full support of the German government.
In a speech on February 27, German chancellor Olaf Scholz called on Germany to "change course to overcome our dependence on imports from individual energy suppliers." Germany currently gets around half of its gas and its coal from Russia, along with a third of its oil.
This shift in strategy will involve building two LNG import terminals in Brunsbuettel and Wilhelmshaven, as well as efforts to expand domestic gas supply, which has been in decline for years.
