Poland's Tauron Syncs 450-MW Gas Plant with Grid

Polish power utility Tauron has synchronised the long-delayed 450-MW Stalowa Wola combined-cycle gas turbine unit in southern Poland with the national grid, it said on August 24.

The station, a joint investment with Polish gas supplier PGNiG, was built to replace older coal-burning capacity at the site scheduled for decommissioning.

The unit will be able to serve 1.2mn households with electricity, Tauron said, noting it was compliant with very strict environmental standards. It will emit only 360 kg of CO2/MWh and very low amounts of NOx and SOx.

PGNiG and Tauron partnered on the project back in 2012, hiring Spain's Abener Energia as a construction contractor.  But that contract was later cancelled after Tauron said Abener had failed to meet deadlines. Tauron then picked a group of Polish companies led by Energopomiar in 2017 to finish the work.

Tauron said in March that the unit would come online in the second quarter, but further delays were caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
