Poland prepares to lay Baltic Pipe

Polish gas transmission system operator Gaz-System reported on May 6 that final preparations were underway to start laying the 10bn m3/year Baltic Pipe in the Baltic Sea.

Three vessels will begin laying some 274 km of pipeline in the summer, Gaz-System said. Research ships have been inspecting the project route for unexploded ordinance and environmental issues since last year.

Baltic Pipe will pump Norwegian gas, sourced mostly from fields owned by Poland's gas import monopoly PGNiG, via Denmark to Poland, helping the latter reduce supplies from Russia. It is slated for completion on October 1, 2022.

Speaking at a ceremony on board one of the pipelaying vessels on May 5, Gaz-System president Tomasz Stepien noted that pipeline welding would be completed this year, while pressure tests, trials and certification to approve its use will take place in 2022.
