Pilot Energy completes study on West Australia hydrogen project

Sydney-listed Pilot Energy has completed the feasibility study for its proposed clean hydrogen project in Western Australia’s Mid-West region, it said on March 28.

The company said that the study confirms the Mid-West region’s viability to produce “globally competitive clean hydrogen together with multi-staged development pathway”.

Pilot last year announced the start of the study to assess the feasibility and economics of, and to recommend the pathway for development for a clean hydrogen production project utilising the company’s existing oil and gas production operations.

The study for the Mid-West Integrated Renewable Energy project looked into the Mid-West blue hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) focused on the Cliff Head oil field, the Mid West renewable energy, the 8 Rivers blue hydrogen technology and the WA 481P CCS.

Next steps for Pilot are to progress into the permitting and approvals process and frontend engineering and design for a staged development of commercialising CCS and blue hydrogen leveraging 8 Rivers technology.
