Petronas' Pacific Northwest LNG Project Further Delayed

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency has been granted a three-month extension to complete the study of the proposed Pacific Northwest LNG project.

“The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, at the Agency's request, has granted a three-month extension to the legislated timeline for the project. The government intends to make a final decision on the project within that timeframe, once the legislated timeline resumes,” the Agency said in a statement published Saturday.  

The Agency said that on March 4, 2016, it received new information from the project developers, which contains additional details about the project and changes to its construction schedule and methods. “This information must be reviewed, analysed, and considered in the final Environmental Assessment Report.”

Petronas and its partners have been waiting nearly three years for a permit to build the $28 billion LNG facility in northern British Columbia. Petronas is the majority owner of Pacific NorthWest LNG with minority partners being Indian Oil Corp, Sinopec, Japex and PetroleumBrunei.

Pacific NorthWest LNG Ltd. is proposing to construct and operate LNG facility and marine terminal near Prince Rupert, within the District of Port Edward.
