Petrofac, CO2 Capsol form carbon capture partnership

UK engineering group Petrofac announced on September 16 it had teamed up with Norwegian carbon capture technology developer CO2 Capsol to work on CO₂ capture initiatives.

While CO₂ Capsol will provide the technology, Petrofac will serve as a preferred engineering services partner to work with the developer at projects across the UK, Europe and in time, globally. They have signed a non-exclusive agreement on this cooperation.

"Industry collaborations that support the acceleration of critical net zero infrastructure will be fundamental to the energy transition," Petrofac COO John Pearson said. "Alongside Petrofac’s global engineering and operations experience, we see great potential for efficient technologies such as those developed by CO2 Capsol, to bring down cost across the value chain as we seek to de-risk and fast-track carbon capture projects for industrial emitters."

Petrofac recently secured a front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract from Sweden's Stockholm Exergi to capture CO₂ at a combined heat and power plant, while CO2 Capsol's technology was selected for the project. It will be the largest bioenergy carbon capture and storage (CCS) plant in Europe, capturing up to 800,000 metric tons of CO₂/year.

The station is due online in the second half of 2025.

CO2 Capsol CEO Jan Kielland noted the rapid growth in the market for carbon capture projects.

"The whole value chain from capturing to permanent storage or industrial use of the CO₂ has increased dramatically," he said. "European markets are developing at high speed and projects are receiving strong political and financial support."
