Oz's State Gas Recruits COO

Brisbane-based junior State Gas has recruited James Crowley as its new chief operating officer, it said April 24. He is leaving the post of gas operations manager at leading Australian energy retailer AGL.

His career has spanned 34 years in Australia, Egypt, New Zealand and the North Sea, including senior executive roles for Senex, Origin Energy, and Apache Corporation, as well as AGL.

State Gas, which is operator and 60%-owner of the Reid’s Dome and Cattle Creek Conventional Gas Project in Central Queensland’s Bowen Basin, said that Crowley will help drive progress in the appraisal and development of the project, and would also facilitate consideration and assessment of new projects, as the company looks to expand its portfolio.

“James’ expertise, together with CEO Lucy Snelling’s commercial and leadership acumen and the Board’s existing skill set puts State Gas in a strong position to deliver on our plans for the PL-231 project and future opportunities,” State Gas chairman Tony Bellas said.

Earlier this year, State Gas completed flow-testing from the long-shut-in conventional wells in the northern half of PL 231. It reported that, despite the age of the wells, which were drilled between 11 and 37 years ago, they flowed “significantly” at lowest record stabilised rates of between 357,000 ft3/d and 658,000 ft3/d.

Gas composition results indicate the produced gas represents a similar composition in its natural form to that of pipeline-quality gas, with an average methane content of approximately 96%, average carbon dioxide content of about 1.5% and very low levels of inerts, it said at the time.
