Ovintiv CEO set for summer retirement
The executive who engineered the move of former Canadian natural gas giant Encana to the US and changed its name to Ovintiv in 2020 is set to retire from the Denver-based company effective August 1, the company said June 8.
Doug Suttles joined Encana as CEO in 2013 after 30 years in the upstream oil and gas industry, first with ExxonMobil and then with BP, where he led the company’s reaction after the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. He will be replaced as CEO and on Ovintiv’s board by Brendan McCracken, who started at Encana as a summer intern nearly 25 years ago and was named Ovintiv’s president in December 2020.

"Today's news is the culmination of our comprehensive succession planning process and the board unanimously elected Brendan as the next CEO of Ovintiv,” board chair Peter Dea said. “His appointment reflects his strong leadership skills, broad background and track record for delivering strong results.”
Suttles was vilified for his decision to move Encana – at the time an iconic presence in the Canadian natural gas industry and considered immune to acquisition by US interests – and for the corporate name change, which removed any reference to its Canadian heritage.
