Oil, gas sector methane emissions jump in Q3: GHGSat
The number of methane plumes detected from the oil and gas industry increased by 47% in the third quarter compared with the previous three months, Quebec-based GHGSat noted in a report shared with NGW on November 4.
Around 375 plumes were detected by GHGSat's three satellites launched in 2016, 2020 and 2021, versus roughly 250 in the second quarter, the company said. The number of plumes recorded by the company has been rising steadily since the first quarter of 2020, as has the volume of methane detected.

Meanwhile, the number of plumes detected from coal mining this year is higher than all plumes detected between 2017 and 2020, GHGSat said.
Central Asia alone accounts for 51% of methane emissions volumes detected from oil, gas and coal operations by GHGSat this year, while Asia was responsible for 25%, Australia 6%, the Middle East 5%, Latin America 5%, North America 4% and Europe 1%.
"GHGSat operates the world's only satellites designed to detect facility-level greenhouse gas emissions," GHGSat said. "Data collected are based on direct measurements from these satellites, not models or estimates."
