NNPC Chief Named Advisory Board Head

The Nigerian Gas Association, which represents gas producers and pipeline operators active in Nigeria, named state producer NNPC's group managing director Maikanti Baru as chairman of its new advisory board.

NGA has not been afraid of criticising government gas policy and the role of incumbent NNPC (Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation) in the past.

Baru was named to the largely honorary role during

a round-table event October 16 attended by CEOs and directors of member companies in Lagos, at which NG

A President Dada Thomas said that the Nigerian economy needs further gas development based on active private sector participation.

Baru's appointment comes at a time when the NNPC has announced an ambitious 2016-2019 'Big Wins' gas development programme, plus NNPC's 12 Key Business Focus Areas to grow the oil and gas industry. These aim to ensure gas infrastructure development is enhanced for increasing gas supply.

He

pledged to pursue those programmes, arguing that Nigeria's gas reform was anchored on a robust strategic framework: "I

commit myself and NGA Advisory Board members to do everything possible to achieve the objectives of the board which align perfectly with NNPC's key business focus area."

He said investment opportunities exist across the upstream and contracting sectors, in the leasing of drillrigs, gas processing, mini and floating LNG, gas storage, long-distance pipeline construction, metering and pipe fabrication, and wider manufacturing and banking sectors.

NGA's executive board includes Thomas who is CEO of independent Frontier Oil, alongside Nigeria LNG CEO Tony Attah, the co-founder of local Falcon Corp. Audrey Joe-Ezigbo, and other representatives of foreign and Nigerian firms.
