New Fortress Energy earns Mexican LNG export authorisation

New Fortress Energy (NFE) said June 2 it had received an export permit from Mexico’s Ministry of Energy (SENER) for LNG exports from its planned Altamira Fast LNG facility.

The permit authorises NFE to export up to 7.8mn metric tons of LNG through April 2028, more than sufficient given the 1.4mn mt/yr capacity of the Fast LNG facility. NFE earlier received US Department of Energy approval to export US-sourced LNG to Mexico and other FTA countries.

“This permit is the final piece to the puzzle for launching our first Fast LNG in Altamira,” NFE CEO Wes Edens said. “Obtaining this authorisation not only paves the way for operations to commence at our new LNG hub in the third quarter of this year, but it also advances our efforts to expand access to cleaner, cheaper and more reliable energy to customers around the world.”

Construction of the first Fast LNG unit is now more than 90% complete and deployment to Altamira is expected to begin later this month. Operations are slated to begin in Q2 2023.
