Kosmos Earnings Slide in Q1 on Weaker Sales
Texas-based Kosmos Energy registered a 37% decline in core earnings in the three months ending on March, it said, as a result of lower sales volumes and weaker prices.

The Big Picture:
- Kosmos' sales volumes were down 22%, despite production rising 11.4%.
- Kosmos is a partner in the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG development off the coast of Mauritania and Senegal.
Woodside Awards Contract for West Oz Gas Link
Australia's Woodside has awarded a supply and fabrication contract to local engineering firm Civmec relating to the construction of a 5-km pipeline between its Pluto LNG plant and the North West Shelf project's Karratha gas plant, it said.
The Big Picture:
- The interconnector is due on stream in 2022 and aims to optimise Woodside's processing of gas from offshore fields in Western Australia, by flowing excess gas at Pluto LNG to the Karratha plant, and vice versa.
Coal India to Implement CBM Projects
The CMPDI, the exploration and consultancy arm of state-run Coal India, has been appointed as the principal implementing agency for the development of coalbed methane (CBM) in CIL’s leasehold areas, CMPDI said on May 9 on Twitter.
The Big Picture:
- Inconsistent government policies have frustrated Indian efforts to exploit CBM, despite the country having large reserves.
- In 2018, India's cabinet changed the rules to make it easier for CIL to explore and exploit CBM from its coal mines.
Topside Installed for Norway's Nova Field
UK-based Neptune Energy announced the successful lift of the 740-metric tons topside module for the Nova oil and gas development in the Norwegian North Sea.
The Big Picture:
- Wintershall Dea's Nova field will be tied back to a platform at the Neptune Energy-operated Gjoa field.
West Oz Plans LNG Bunkering Hub at Pilbara
The Western Australian government is looking to establish an LNG fuelling hub for bulk vessels in the Pilbara, it said on May 9 in a statement.
The Big Picture:
- Last week, Pilbara Port Authority (PPA) granted a ship-to-ship LNG bunkering licence to Woodside, which is finalising plans for an LNG bunkering operation in the Pilbara to capture the environmental and economic benefits of using LNG, instead of fuel oil, for the iron ore shipping trade.
Natural gas demand growth moderated but remained strong: CEDIGAZ
CEDIGAZ, the International Association for Natural Gas, has released its "First Estimates 2020”.
The Big Picture:
- The growth in natural gas demand has slowed down from 5% in 2018 to 2.3% in 2019, returning to the average annual growth rate observed since the start of the century.
- Natural gas has remained the main beneficiary of the energy demand growth, to the detriment of coal in particular, causing its share in the energy mix to expand further.
