Naftogaz to Triple Gas Prices for Ukrainian Consumers By Winter
Ukraine’s Naftogaz said that it could raise energy prices for Ukrainian consumers, while focusing also on the negotiation with Gazprom to secure continued flow of gas.
“This winter is going to be very difficult,” said Andriy Kobolyev, CEO of Naftogaz, after traveling to Slovakia.
Kobolyev took part to the ceremony for the first flows of gas from the EU into Ukraine.
“It might happen that there won’t be any Russian gas in the winter,” he added, explaining that the situation will force the company to increase prices, in some cases more than tripling them.
According to the note, about one third of Ukrainian households pay 30 hryvnia ($2.40) a month for unlimited gas use. Kobolyev wants to raise that price to 100 hryvnia before winter.
Naftogaz’ CEO expects the raise to push down the demand for gas.
“It may sound surprising, but most people in Ukraine can afford to pay higher price for gas. Anyway, the current consumption is too high, so people should learn to save gas.”
