Myanmar Mulls Cutting Gas Exports to Thailand

Myanmar is in talks with Thailand to reduce the amount of natural gas exports to the kingdom. Myanmar wants to cut down exports from 1000 million cubic feet to 800 million cubic feet.

Local media reports say that the move is aimed at augmenting gas supplies to local electricity producers. Government officials were quoted as saying that government has adopted an energy policy in which oil and natural gas will be prioritised for domestic use.

Htay Aung, director-general at the Ministry of Energy, said, “The government will amend the contracts on export of natural gas as domestic demand is rising. All the exploited oil and natural gas will not be exported so as to supply domestic needs. After fulfilling the domestic needs, these natural resources will be processed into value-added products for the export sector.”
