Moldova, Gazprom strike gas deal

Russia's Gazprom has signed a new five-year supply contract with Moldova, potentially averting an energy crisis in the former Soviet state.

"Gazprom and Moldovagaz have extended a contract for Russian gas supplies for five years, starting from November 1, 2021 on mutually beneficial terms," Gazprom said on October 29.

Deputy prime minister Andrei Spinu said on social media that Moldova would be paying $450/'000 m3 for gas in November.

Gazprom supplies almost all of Moldova's gas, with shipments exceeding 3bn m3 in 2020.

Moldova declared a state of emergency over its gas shortages on October 22, after Gazprom cut supplies at the start of that month. The country has reached out to Poland and Ukraine to access alternative gas.
