MOL launches Japan's 1st LNG-fuelled ferry
Japanese shipping company Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) on March 3 held the naming and launching ceremonies for the first of Japan's first two LNG-fuelled ferries.
The first vessel was named Sunflower Kurenai and will enter service on the Osaka-Beppu route in January 2023. Both the ferries, which will be operated by Ferry Sunflower Co., a unit of MOL, are being built by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co.

The vessels will have a dual-fuel engine able to operate on both LNG and A‐type heavy oil. According to Mitsubishi, these engines will produce 20% less carbon dioxide than the vessels they are replacing, and virtually zero sulphur oxides.
MOL last month ordered two more LNG-fuelled ferries. The vessels will be built by Japanese shipbuilder Naikai Zosen Corporation.
