MOL launches commercial ops of FSRU Jawa Satu in Indonesia
Japan's Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has commenced commercial operations of its floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) named Jawa Satu, aimed at supplying gas to the Jawa 1 gas-fired power plant in Indonesia, it announced on April 5.
The FSRU is owned by Jawa Satu Regas (JSR), a joint venture formed by MOL, Pertamina, Marubeni Corporation, Sojitz Corporation, and other partners. MOL signed a deal for supervision, maintenance and operation services of the FSRU in 2018.
Jawa Satu will facilitate the receipt of LNG for power generation from LNG carriers via ship-to-ship transfer operations. It will store the LNG, regasify it, and then supply it to Jawa Satu Power, a joint venture established by Pertamina, Marubeni, and Sojitz, which operates the Jawa 1 power plant located in West Java. The Jawa 1 power plant has a generating capacity of 1.76 GW.
The electricity generated by the Jawa 1 power plant will be supplied to Indonesia's state utility PLN under a 25-year agreement. The overall cost of the power project is expected to be $1.8bn.
According to MOL, this is Asia's first such gas-to-power project where an FSRU, power generation and other gas facilities will be developed in an integrated manner. The 170,000 m3 FSRU is placed 14 km offshore in the Cilamaya Sea, east of Jakarta and connected to the power plant via a 21-km pipeline.
