Missouri farm to draw energy from manure
US-based Monarch Bioenergy announced August 11 that it completed the installation of technology that can convert manure from a hog farm to energy.
Monarch, a joint venture between Smithfield Foods and Roeslein Alternative Energy (RAE), finished the installation at a farm in Missouri. The facility will capture the methane emissions from manure and convert that into a form of natural gas viewed as renewable.

“We are leading the way to improve the industry's environmental footprint and diversify its income stream,” RAE CEO Rudi Roeslein said. “This is a blueprint on how to turn challenges into opportunities."
Considered renewable natural gas (RNG), manure-to-power is garnering more attention during the energy transition.
Archaea Energy in May started up an RNG facility in Kentucky that uses landfill gas. The company said, however, that previous efforts to use the gas emitted from the decomposition of landfill material were unable to produce pipeline-quality RNG unless it was blended with significant amounts of conventional natural gas.
