Milestone Carbon plans Midland sequestration hub
Milestone Carbon, which provides CO2 sequestration services to industrial emitters, said September 26 it would develop a carbon sequestration hub in the Midland Basin capable of storing up to 30mn tonnes of CO2.
The hub would comprise 10,000 acres of land and pore space spanning parts of Midland and Upton counties in the southwest corner of the Midland Basin in Texas.
Milestone Carbon, a subsidiary of Milestone Environmental Services, recently received a Class II injection well permit from the Texas Railroad Commission, which allows for sequestration of CO2 from local natural gas processors. It has also applied for a Class VI injection well permit from the US Environmental Protection Agency which would allow for the injection of CO2 from other industrial emitters.
Depending on the timing of infrastructure development and commercial arrangements with emitters, injections could begin as early as 2025, which would make the project among the first active carbon capture and storage (CCS) sites for permanent CO2 sequestration in Texas.
