Mexico’s 2P Gas Reserves Higher, But Proved Are Down

Mexico’s combined proved plus probable (2P) natural gas reserves rose 0.4% to 19.4 trillion ft³ at year-end 2018 from 19.3 trillion ft³ at year-end 2017, according to data released February 13 by the country’s National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH).

Proved reserves were off 3.6%, at 10 trillion ft³ versus 10.4 trillion ft³, but probable reserves rose 5.1%, to 9.4 trillion ft³ from 8.9 trillion ft³, the CNH report said.

CNH said that 15 of Mexico’s main gas fields accounted for 47% of the country’s total proved reserves. The top five fields were Akal, Maloob, Jujo-Tecominoacan, Zaap, and Onel.

Slightly more than half the proved reserves are onshore; shallow waters offshore account for 45.4% of the total, while the remaining 3.6% are in deep waters, CNH said.
