McDermott Gets Key Qatar Contract
Qatar Petroleum has awarded the design contract for the offshore jackets for the new North Field expansion project to McDermott, it said May 5.
According to Qatar Petroleum, the design of the jackets is an important step towards awarding the procurement, fabrication and installation (Epci) contract by the end of this year, which will pave the way to starting the drilling campaign in 2019. Qatargas will be executing this project on behalf of Qatar Petroleum, and will start the detailed engineering with McDermott for the offshore jackets in addition to the recently announced onshore Feed with Chiyoda.

In order to compete with emerging LNG exporters, US and Australia, Qatar, last year decided to lift a moratorium on increasing production from North Field.
“This is yet another milestone on the road to implementing one of the most ambitious gas projects in the southern sector of the North Field, and starting the first LNG production from the new LNG mega train by the end of 2023. Thereby increasing our LNG production capacity from 77mn mt to of 100mn mt/year,” Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, CEO of Qatar Petroleum said.
With a targeted capacity of 4.6bn ft3/d, the North Field expansion project will add about 1mn barrels per day of oil equivalent to Qatar’s production, he said.
The awarded contract is part of a larger wide-ranging offshore scope of works, which consists of six wellhead platforms, jackets and associated intra-field and main trunk lines to shore, to deliver 4.6bn ft3/d of gas from Qatar’s North Field, which is the largest non-associated gas field in the world, the company said.
The offshore facilities will be integrated with three new 7.8mn mt/yr LNG trains, which will increase production from 77mn mt/yr to 100mn mt/yr.
