Malaysia, Brunei Plan to Jointly Explore for Oil, Gas in South China Sea

Malaysia and Brunei are planning to jointly explore for oil and gas in the CA1 and CA2 fields in the South China Sea, according to The Star newspaper.

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak and Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah agreed Tuesday that the pace of commercial exploitation for oil and gas along the shared boundaries should be hastened, the newspaper said.

The two countries will soon start negotiating how to share profits once the oil and gas exploration reached the commercial production stage.

“The oil and gas exploration jointly undertaken by Malaysia and Brunei is in areas where there were overlapping boundary claims before. The issues on the boundary claims have been resolved generally,” Najib said.
