LNG-powered containerships slated for US West Coast
Clean Energy Fuels said September 21 it had committed to supplying two containerships powered by super-cooled liquid natural gas that will be among the first calling on the US West Coast.
Clean Energy will supply World Fuel Services with around 78mn gallons of LNG for two containerships that will operate from the Port of Long Beach in California. These will be among the first LNG-powered vessels to call on the US West Coast and “and the first to service Hawaii.”

Vessel operators are turning to LNG and other, cleaner fuels to comply with mandates from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) on emissions.
“Both ships will surpass the IMO 2030 standards for ocean vessels with zero sulfur emissions, a 90% reduction in nitrogen oxide and 25% reduction in carbon dioxide as compared to liquid fuel oil,” Clean Energy said.
The two MV class vessels could be in service as early as the fourth quarter. The LNG will come from Clean Energy’s liquefaction facility in Boron, California, where it is in the process of adding a new train that will boost production by about 50%.
