Lithuania bans Russian gas purchases: press
Lithuanian legislators have enacted a new law banning Russian gas imports into the country, Lrt.lt reported June 28
Lithuania in April became the first European country to reduce gas imports from Russia to zero, leveraging its 2.7mn metric ton/year LNG import terminal in Klaipeda.

Legislators have now formally banned any Russian gas from entering the domestic distribution grid, including Russian LNG. The prohibition covers any country deemed hostile to Lithuania's national interest, though an exception is made for Russian gas that is transited through Lithuania to Russia's Kaliningrad exclave.
Russia brought an LNG importing vessel to Kaliningrad in 2019 in order to reduce dependence on Lithuanian transit, and president Vladimir Putin is eager to expand LNG to the exclave.
Kaliningrad has significant strategic importance to Russia, hosting its Baltic fleet and serving as a deployment location for Russian nuclear-capable Iskander missiles.
