KPO announces final commissioning stage of Karachaganak expansion project

Karachaganak Petroleum Operating (KPO) announced on July 4 that the Karachaganak expansion project (KEP-1A) in Kazakhstan is now in the final stage of commissioning.

“Fuel gas has been successfully introduced, and the project is now in the final stage of commissioning. In the coming weeks, this will enable the initiation of reservoir injection through the operation of the fifth compressor,” KPO stated.

The new compressor is set to significantly boost gas re-injection volumes, maintaining reservoir pressure and extending the field’s liquid production period. The project includes the installation of new gas compression units and gas dehydration units, which are essential for efficient gas processing and re-injection, KPO said.

The Karachaganak field, located in north-west Kazakhstan, was commissioned in 1979. KPO is a joint venture of Eni (29.25%), Shell (29.25%), Chevron (18%), Lukoil (13.5%), and KMG (10%) and is the operator of the project.

In June, engineering company Technip Energies, through its joint venture TKJV with KPSP, announced the signing of a long-term services agreement with KPO for the development of the Karachaganak field.
