Italy's Saipem Acquires CO2 Capture Tech

Italian oilfield services group Saipem said on January 22 it had bought proprietary technology for CO₂ capture from Canada’s CO₂ Solutions (CSI).

The technology entails an enzymatic CO₂ capture process that does not produce or emit any toxic products, Saipem said in a statement. It has been developed over the past 20 years in Canada, with support from the governments of Canada, the US and the EU.

Saipem also said it had acquired CSI’s broader portfolio of intellectual property, including 90 granted and pending patents. It will also take control of a CO₂ capture plant at a pulp mill in Quebec.

“The assets and technology purchased will help us expand our green products portfolio and will underpin our resolve to support the industry towards a low carbon energy future,” the chief operating officer of Saipem’s onshore engineering division, Maurizio Coratella, said.
