Italy Still Interested in GALSI Pipeline Project

Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Paolo Gentiloni on Monday said Rome is still interested in the GALSI gas pipeline project, linking Algeria to Italy via Sardinia, reported state owned Algeria Press Service.

"We are still interested in the project (GALSI) and we support the idea of the diversification of energy resources," Gentiloni said during a press conference held in Algiers jointly with his Algerian counterpart Ramtane Lamamra.

The gas pipeline, which would start from the Hassi R'mel field in Algeria, is due to have a capacity of 8 billion cubic metres per year. Algeria’s Sonatrach owns 41.6 % of the project. The other partners are Italy's Edison (20.8%), Enel (15.6%) and Hera Trading (10.4%), and the Sardinia Autonomous Region's Sfirs (11.6%).

The feasibility study for the pipeline was completed in 2005.The intergovernmental agreement on the GALSI pipeline was signed between Italy and Algeria in November 2007.
