Iran's Gas Exports to Iraq to Rise Substantially

Iran will supply 65-70 per cent of Baghdad's and 30-35 per cent of the entire Iraq’s gas needs, the National Iranian Gas Company’s (NIGC) Managing Director Javad Oji said.

Speaking to Shana News Agency, Oji said the country now exports 35-37 mcm of gas per day and by execution of the new contract with Iraq exports will reach 55-60 mcm/d and will hit 75-80 mcm/d in the second phase of the deal. These figures would be 2.5 times the initial amount of gas exported.

He further said that pricing formula for gas export to Iraq is the same in Pakistan and Turkey gas agreements and could constitute a basis for selling gas to other Persian Gulf countries, Shana reported.

Oji said that Iraq has also requested Iran to take part in laying gas pipeline in the country and building Iraq’s gas network. Iraq also stressed on finalizing the second gas contract as soon as possible, the news agency said.

South pars gas field will be the main source of providing Iraq’s gas needs.
