Iran Keen to Raise Gas Exports to Iraq, Afghanistan

Iran is planning to raise gas and oil exports to neighbouring countries mainly Iraq and Afghanistan, an Iranian energy official said.

According to Tasnim News Agency, Managing Director of National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC) Mostafa Kashkouli stated expected increase in the export of energy will be brought about by the development of the country’s giant offshore South Pars gas field phases.

“Given their potential for income generation and hard currency earnings, liquid fuel exports herald a bright perspective for the country,” he explained.

Iran is also weighing plans to export liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to those two neighbors, Kashkouli said.

Last year, Iran and Iraq inked a gas supply deal where Tehran would supply gas to two Iraqi power plants. Earlier this year Iranian energy officials said that a second natural gas deal might be in the offing. Iranian gas is expected to begin flowing to Iraq by March 2015.
