Invictus awards seismic contract for phase 2 of Zimbabwe campaign
Australia’s Invictus Energy has awarded a contract to Polaris Natural Resource Development for an infill 2D seismic survey as part of its phase two exploration campaign in the Cabora Bassa gas project in Zimbabwe, it said on May 17.
Polaris previously conducted the successful CB21 2D seismic survey in 2021, which helped the company refine the drilling programme for the Mukuyu-1 well and confirmed the presence of a working hydrocarbon system in the basin, including light oil, gas-condensate, and helium.
The CB21 seismic survey also identified multiple stacked hydrocarbon-bearing zones in the Basin Margin play, estimated to hold nearly 1.2bn barrels of prospective oil resources. The new round of high-resolution 2D seismic data aims to further mature already identified leads within the Cabora Bassa acreage into drillable prospects, expanding the company's exploration portfolio, the company said.
Preparations are also underway for the Mukuyu-2 appraisal well, scheduled to spud in the third quarter of 2023. The well will target multiple hydrocarbon-bearing intervals encountered in the Mukuyu-1 well, with the objective of confirming a gas-condensate discovery. It will also test the Post Dande horizon away from the major fault on the southern flank and explore the remaining Upper Angwa formation, providing additional upside potential.
The Cabora Bassa project comprises the Mzarabani and Msasa gas and condensate prospects, which Invictus describes as "world-class multi-trillion ft3" plays. It is operated and 80% owned by Invictus.
