Indonesia to Launch First CBM Fired Power Plant

Indonesia is all set to launch its first power plant using coal bed methane this year.

Upstream oil and gas regulatory special task force SKKMigas chief Hadi Prasetyo said on Wednesday Virginia Indonesia Co. (VICO), which operates Sanga-Sanga block, will supply CBM to a gas-fired power plant in Sangatta, East Kalimantan, Jakarta Globe reported.

VICO, a joint venture between British giant BP and Italy’s ENI, will supply half a million metric standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of CBM from 15 wells on the block. 

The company will also continue to evaluate the CBM reserves at its Sanga-Sanga block for the next three years while continuing to supply gas to the plant, VICO Indonesia general affairs and communication manager Lies Tjokro was reported by Jakarta Post as saying.

“I cannot confirm yet on how much CBM we can produce in the coming years as we will need the next three years to study before submitting a plan of development to SKKMigas,” she said.
