IEA head Fatih Birol secures third term
The governing board of the International Energy Agency (IEA) has voted unanimously to reappoint director Fatih Birol for a third term, the Paris-based organisation reported on March 25.
The IEA has placed increasing focus on the energy transition in recent years, culminating in its release last year of its Net Zero by 2050 report, which concluded that no further investments in oil and gas supply would be necessary if the world continues on a pathway to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The report faced a critical backlash from the oil and gas industry, and since then, oil and gas prices have soared following a sharp post-coronavirus rebound in demand and insufficient investment in new supply.

Birol's reappointment for another two years "comes at a pivotal moment for the IEA amid heightened awareness that clean energy transitions must be not only rapid but also secure," the agency said.
Birol has served as director since September 2015. Last year Time magazine named him on its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
