Guangdong Dapeng LNG Terminal has Supplied Over 8mn mt of LNG to Hong Kong

CNOOC Gas & Power operated and majority owned Guangdong Dapeng LNG regasification terminal has supplied over 8mn metric tons (10.4bn m³) of LNG to Hong Kong in the last decade, CNOOC Gas& Power said October 13.

CNOOC supplies power company Hong Kong Electric and gas company Towngas with regasified LNG from its Guangdong Dapeng LNG terminal in Shenzhen via an undersea pipeline. Of the 8mn mt of the LNG supplied, 4.8mn mt went to Hong Kong Electric for power generation while the rest was supplied to Towngas.

The Guangdong Dapeng LNG regasification terminal became operational on September 28, 2016. CNOOC Gas & Power holds a 33% stake in Guangdong Dapeng LNG while BP is the second largest shareholder with a 30% interest.

Hong Kong does not have a regasification terminal of its own but CLP Group, one of the largest investor-owned power businesses in Asia Pacific, says it needs one.

Michael Kadoorie, chairman of CLP Holdings, the holding company for the CLP Group, earlier this year said that as Hong Kong sees greater reliance on gas to meet local power generation needs, guarantee of stable and secure supply is extremely important and one option that makes sense is to develop an offshore LNG terminal.

This would enable CLP, along with other large users of natural gas in Hong Kong, to access international supplies of LNG not only as alternative physical supply option, but also as an alternative commercial option to secure the most competitive source of gas, he said.
