Gripen Awarded Unconventional Gas Licences in Sweden
Gripen Gas AB, the independent Swedish gas exploration company, has received notification that Bergsstaten (Swedish Mines Inspectorate) has awarded the company five exploration licences totaling 186km2 on Öland, in Kalmar County and a further two licences totaling 11km2 in Östergötland County. The exploration licences are for unconventional gas exploration in the organic rich Alum shale formation.
These seven new awards plus the existing five licences in Östergötland make Gripen the principal gas explorer in Sweden at 421km2.
The five exploration licences (Greby, Össby, Nyby, Lundeby and Melby) in Öland cover a range of potential Cambro‐Ordivician exploration targets for unconventional hydrocarbons. A number of wells drilled 40 years ago recorded hydrocarbon shows in the Cambrian sandstone and the Cambro-Ordovician Alum shale.
The exploration licences have been awarded for an initial period of three years, which maybe extended for a further three years.
Gripen Gas Chairman, Torgny Berglund, said: “We are delighted that Bergsstaten have awarded these licences to Gripen Gas, as they strengthen our position in Sweden as a key unconventional hydrocarbon energy company. Our preliminary studies show that the Alum Shale could yield sufficient gas to generate power with the added upside of stratigraphically trapped hydrocarbons in the Cambrian sandstones. The numerous show indicate an active petroleum system with both conventional and unconventional trapping mechanisms.”
