Greenpeace Anti-Fracking Campaign Registers First Support

The anti-fracking campaign launched by Greenpeace on Monday registered support from exponents of the food industry. Andrew Pemberton, a dairy farmer in Lancashire, joined the campaign fearing local water contamination.

Greenpeace launched wrongmove.org and the Not for Shale “legal block” on Monday, claiming that horizontal drilling would be unlawful without permission. The charity urged landowners to veto drilling underneath their properties.

The Government promptly dismissed the campaign.

"This is not a block to shale gas development in the UK. There is flexibility about where to locate a drilling rig to access any oil or gas resources,” commented the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

The Government recently released a consultation to streamline procedures and allow drilling under homes also without residents’ permission.

“It’s great news that DECC agrees with the Greenpeace analysis of the law. This sounds like confirmation that fracking companies will not frack without express permission from those living above it,” answered Greenpeace in a note released on Monday.
