Germany stresses need for new gas-fired power: press
German finance minister Olaf Scholz said October 27 that Germany would need to build new gas power plants as it moves beyond nuclear and coal, the Reuters news service reported.
Scholz, a Social Democrat, is widely expected to succeed German chancellor Angela Merkel. Speaking at a conference organised by a labour union, Scholz said the new government also needs to overcome bureaucratic hurdles to bring more renewable power to the German economy.

“If you're exiting, you're also having to enter somewhere else,” he was quoted by Reuters as saying.
The exit is in reference to the planned phase out of nuclear- and coal-fired power plants.
His comments echo an emerging sentiment in Germany. Mario Mehren, the CEO of German energy company Wintershall DEA said that policymakers need to embrace natural gas as a core component of the energy transition. As energy demand rises, and given the intermittent nature of renewable forms of energy such as wind and solar power, it is gas that will bridge the gap, he said.
