German Gas Demand Drops Year on Year
German gas demand fell 12.7% in 2018 relative to 2017 to 61.6bn kWh, according to energy analysis by AGEB published January 24. This was despite the much higher demand for heating in February and March, related to the cold weather, it said.
It said that after the cold weather in the first quarter had led to a significant increase in consumption, higher temperatures led to lower consumption in the space heating market during the course of the year. In addition, the further increase in power generation from renewable energies as well as price developments had an influence on the decline in consumption in the full year.

Gas use declined less than coal use, but more than lignite use; only renewables saw a rise year on year, as the country's overall energy use fell 5%.
