Gazprom to Build Vietnamese Gas Plant
The international arm of Russia's Gazprom has announced its selection by the Vietnamese government as an investor for the construction of a gas-fired power plant in Vietnam's Quang Tri province.
Gazprom EP International is developing a feasibility study and is ready to begin the project's active stage, it said in a statement on April 21. The combined-cycle gas power plant is expected to have a 340-MW capacity and come on stream in 2027. An agreement on the allocation of coastal land for the station was signed at a forum in St Petersburg last year.
The project will be realised on a build-operate-transfer basis, with the Vietnamese state guaranteeing the purchase of its electricity at an agreed price.
There is a flurry of interest among investors in gas-fired power projects in Vietnam, which is looking to bolster the use of gas and move away from coal and oil-based generation. Gazprom's domestic rival Novatek penned a preliminary deal last year to co-operate in developing a Vietnamese power plant that will run on LNG.
