Gazprom Suspends Output at Siberian Field After Fire

Russia's Gazprom has suspended production at the Yubileynoye gas field in the Yamalo-Nenets region of west Siberia following a fire, its local division reported on February 26.

The field underwent an emergency shutdown at 10:45 am local time after a fire broke out at a gas treatment unit, Gazprom Dobycha Nadym said. No injuries were reported and there is no threat to the population, the company said.

Yubileynoye was launched in 2000 and has yielded over 300bn m3 of gas since then.

The incident occurs days after an explosion occurred at a Gazprom pipeline that carries gas to Kazakhstan, forcing the company to divert supply to other routes. The Soviet-built Soyuz pipeline runs from Russia through Kazakhstan and back into Russia and then heads to Ukraine.

The blast happened near the village of Mukranovo in the Orenburg region on the morning of February 23, Russia's energy ministry reported later that day. A drop in pipeline pressure was detected at the Orenburg-Novopskov pipeline, and a portion was closed. No one was hurt in the incident.

Gas transit to Kazakhstan was halted as a result, although supplies have been increased along other routes and reserves were used to supply customers, according to the ministry. However, Kazakhstan's energy ministry said deliveries from the Orenburg gas processing plant had been suspended. The Orenburg plant takes unprocessed gas from Kazakhstan's Karachaganak field and sends back treated supplies.
