Gazprom Sends First LNG to Mongolia

Gazprom has delivered the first ever batch of Russian LNG to Mongolia, its export arm reported on November 6.

A shipment of 36 metric tons (mt) of LNG – the equivalent of 50,000 m3 of natural gas – was transported by rail from Yakutia in eastern Siberia to the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar on October 22, Gazprom Export said. Transport was handled by the Siberian Fuel and Energy Company (Sitek), while the buyer was a Mongolian company called UB Metan. The LNG will be used for motor fuel in the public transport sector.

According to UB Metan, demand for LNG in Mongolia could next year reach 8,000 mt.

“It is pleasant that Mongolia has now joined the list of the countries where Russian gas is delivered,” Gazprom Export director Elena Burmistrova said. The use of natural gas on transport is one of the most promising factors of gas consumption growth.”

Gazprom is also planning to use Mongolia as a transit country if it builds a second line to China using a shorter route.
