[Premium] Gazprom 'Resumes' TurkStream 2 Pipelay

The vessel Pioneering Spirit resumed pipelay operations for the second line of the TurkStream offshore gas pipeline system, moving towards Kiyikoy on the Turkish coast, TurkStream owner Gazprom said June 26. Its statement however hinted there had been a mishap.

"After entering the Black Sea on June 20, the vessel conducted a set of preparatory works, including stinger deployment and pipelay equipment check-ups. The pipeline head of the second string was recovered from the bottom of the Black Sea on the border of Russian and Turkish exclusive economic zones (EEZs) at a depth of 2,170 metres," the Russian gas exporter said. The 224-km section of the pipeline leading to the EEZ border was built in 2017.

Pipelaying for the first string of TurkStream’s offshore section was finished in April 2018, at a total length of 1,161km (62% of the overall gas pipeline length) of pipes laid along the two strings.

Separately, Norwegian geosciences firm Spectrum Geo said July 27 it has begun acquisition of its latest offshore multi-client 2D seismic survey, located in the eastern Turkish Black Sea. Phase one comprises 7,000 km of 2D data and is "focused on an area identified to have significant hydrocarbon potential." The survey is expected to take three months to complete, with final products available to clients in 1Q2019.
