Gazprom Hatches New Petchem Plan: Press
Russia’s Gazprom plans to establish a major gas-based petrochemical complex on the Yamal Peninsula, sources told the Moscow-based Vedomosti news outlet on December 18.
The proposed complex would produce around 3mn mt/yr of polyethylene and polypropylene each year, using gas from the giant Bovanenkovo gas field and other deposits in the area. Gazprom has held talks on bringing in foreign partners for the project, including with Saudi Arabia’s Sabic and Azerbaijan’s Socar, according to Vedomosti.
Bovanenkovo produces 115bn m3/yr of gas, most of which is sold in Europe. Gazprom launched development of the nearby Kharasavei field in March, which is expected to yield a further 32bn m3/yr of gas starting in 2023. Its next target is the Kruzenshtern field, due to start up in 2025.
