Gazprom finishes study on Mongolian gas pipe

Gazprom has finished a feasibility study on the development of the Soyuz-Vostok pipeline through Mongolia to China, the Russian state gas company reported on January 25.

The results of the study were reviewed by Gazprom and the Mongolian government, and the two sides have signed a protocol on the project's implementation, the company said. The pipeline will run for 693 km through Mongolia and have a diameter of 1,400 mm.

Soyuz Vostok was first proposed in 2019, months before Russia brought on stream its first pipeline to send gas to China, Power of Siberia. The new pipeline will carry up to 50bn m3/year of gas to China from fields in the Russian Arctic. While Mongolian officials have expressed hope that building work could start as early as 2024, a supply agreement between Russia and China to underpin the project has not been reached. It took over a decade to negotiate a deal for Power of Siberia.
