Gasum partners with Hapag-Lloyd to supply bio-LNG
Nordic energy company Gasum announced on September 2 its partnership with Hapag-Lloyd to supply liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) for the shipping giant’s container vessels over a two-year tender period.
This collaboration aligns with Hapag-Lloyd's recent success in securing the first tender by the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA), which focuses on ocean shipping using waste-based bio-LNG that achieves at least a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, Gasum said.

ZEMBA is a buyers' group in the maritime sector, aiming to accelerate the commercial deployment of zero-emission (ZE) shipping solutions. It is an initiative of Cargo Owners for Zero Emission Vessels (coZEV) and is facilitated by the Aspen Institute Energy & Environment Program.
Under this partnership, Gasum will supply Hapag-Lloyd with the necessary amount of bio-LNG to meet the requirements of the ZEMBA tender. The bio-LNG will be used on a route between Rotterdam and Singapore during the 2025–2026 period.
Bio-LNG is a fully renewable and environmentally friendly fuel, offering life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions that are, on average, 90% lower compared to fossil fuels. It can be utilised in all the same applications as natural gas, including as a fuel for road and maritime transport and as an energy source for industrial use.
Gasum’s biomethane is produced from waste feedstocks such as biowaste, sewage sludge, manure, and other industrial and agricultural by-products. The residual solids and liquids from the biogas production process are further processed for use in agriculture as fertilizers or as raw materials in industrial processes.
The company is committed to increasing its procurement of renewable gas to meet the growing demand for sustainable energy. Gasum operates 17 biogas plants in Finland and Sweden and has established long-term partnerships with certified biogas producers across Europe. The company aims to provide 7 TWh of renewable gas annually by 2027, including biomethane and e-methane, which would result in a combined carbon dioxide reduction of 1.8 million tonnes per year for its customers.
Gasum is equipped to offer bio-LNG bunkering services to all shipping companies with vessels running on liquefied natural gas (LNG), as LNG and bio-LNG are fully interchangeable and can be mixed in any ratio.
