Gasum, Equinor partner for bio-LNG bunkering in Stavanger

Nordic gas company Gasum has partnered with Equinor to conduct a series of liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) bunkering operations at the Port of Dusavik in Stavanger, Norway, the company announced on August 8.

Gasum has supplied ISCC-EU certified mass-balanced bio-LNG to Equinor's chartered platform supply vessel, the Island Crusader. The first successful bio-LNG delivery took place in mid-July, and Gasum plans to continue supplying the vessel with 2–3 truckloads of bio-LNG approximately every other week, with each truckload containing about 22 tonnes.

Equinor aims to become a net-zero emissions energy company by 2050, and these bio-LNG deliveries are part of its broader strategy to achieve this goal, according to Gasum.

Biogas, a fully renewable and environmentally friendly fuel, offers life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions that are on average 90% lower compared to fossil fuels. It can be used in all the same applications as natural gas, including as a fuel for road and maritime transport, and as energy for industrial use. The Island Crusader also features battery hybrid technology, further enhancing its environmental performance.

Gasum is committed to increasing the supply of renewable gas to meet the growing demand for sustainable energy. The company's goal is to offer 7 TWh/year of renewable gas, including biomethane and e-methane, to its customers by 2027.
